About the role
GRIT (Gender Rights in Tech) is a feminist technology non-profit based in Fish Hoek, South Africa, building community-co-created AI for gender rights, safety and justice. Its products include Zuzi, a multilingual WhatsApp companion that uses retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) across 11+ South African languages plus Shona, and inFORMed, a generative-AI tool for completing protection-order forms.
The AI Technical Lead is a senior, hands-on role that owns the build, deployment and continuous improvement of GRIT's feminist AI products. The lead grows a women-of-colour-led feminist-tech team, builds Afrocentric impact measurement, and develops a fellowship and services income model. The role is remote-first, recruited Africa-wide, paid from South Africa, permanent and full-time, and reports to the Managing Director.
Responsibilities
- Own the build, deployment and ongoing improvement of GRIT's feminist AI products (Zuzi and inFORMed).
- Grow and lead a women-of-colour-led feminist-tech team.
- Build Afrocentric impact measurement for the products.
- Develop a fellowship and services income model to sustain the work.
Essential requirements
- Senior, hands-on experience taking LLM/AI systems to production (RAG, prompt engineering, evaluation, deployment).
- 5–10+ years of software engineering experience, with strong Python and distributed-systems skills.
- 2–4+ years of machine-learning / AI experience.
- Commitment to feminist, survivor-centred, community-co-created technology.
Desirable
- Experience deploying over WhatsApp, USSD or other low-connectivity channels.
- African-language natural language processing (NLP) experience.
